Carpet beetles are small beetles whose larvae — not the adults — are responsible for the damage. The larvae feed on keratin-based natural fibres, quietly chewing through woollens, carpets and upholstery stored in the dark, undisturbed corners of a wardrobe for months at a time.

Carpet beetle damage often goes unnoticed until a stored woollen is unpacked at the start of winter with holes already in it.
