The science behind the treatment

Biology and Management of Silverfish

Silverfish are primitive, wingless insects named for their silvery, fish-like movement. They are among the few insects that continue moulting throughout their adult life, and can live for several years — long enough to do quiet, cumulative damage to books, documents and stored fabric before most households even notice them.

Kingdom: AnimaliaPhylum: ArthropodaClass: InsectaOrder: ZygentomaFamily: Lepismatidae

Life cycle

Egg hatch

2–8 weeks, depending on humidity and temperature

Nymph to adult

3–24 months — slow, and highly humidity-dependent

Adult lifespan

2–8 years, unusually long for an insect

Signs of infestation

  • Yellow staining or small notched holes on paper, documents or fabric
  • Tiny pepper-like black droppings near books or in cupboards
  • Shed scales left behind in drawers or shelves
  • Fast-darting insects when a cupboard or drawer is disturbed

Integrated management approach

Inspection

  • Cupboards, bookshelves and storage boxes
  • Bathrooms and basements — the highest-humidity zones

Preventive measures

  • Dehumidify — silverfish thrive above roughly 75% relative humidity
  • Fix leaks and improve ventilation in storage areas
  • Store books and documents in sealed containers with silica gel
  • Reduce clutter that creates dark, undisturbed hiding spots

Monitoring

  • Sticky traps placed inside cupboards and corners

Chemical control

  • Diatomaceous earth or boric-based residual dust in cracks and cupboard corners
  • Crack-and-crevice residual spray with a cupboard-safe formulation
  • Follow-up inspection around day 30

Silverfish damage is slow and easy to miss until a favourite book or heirloom document already has holes in it. Because humidity control does most of the prevention work, our protocol pairs cupboard-safe residual treatment with practical dehumidification advice for lasting protection.
